A once-vacant lot at 151 Metcalfe Street has been transformed into Metcalfe Plaza, a six-week pilot project designed to bring new life and energy to Ottawa’s downtown core.
Launched on August 14 by the Downtown BIA in partnership with Montréal’s Aire commune and Ottawa’s Amashowza, the space offers daytime co-working areas and evening programming featuring music, drag shows, fitness classes, and art markets. The initiative runs until September 20, Thursdays through Saturdays.
“By reimagining underused spaces like 151 Metcalfe, we’re creating new cultural assets and more reasons for people to come downtown, support local businesses, and discover local artists,” said Kevin McHale, Executive Director, Downtown BIA.
Metcalfe Plaza is part of Ottawa’s broader Nightlife Economy Action Plan and has been touted by Nightlife Commissioner Mathieu Grondin as a potential “game-changer” for the city’s downtown nightlife. Mayor Mark Sutcliffe also praised the project after touring the site, calling it “a vibrant new outdoor venue in downtown Ottawa.”
This initiative builds on similar placemaking projects such as Street Seats on Bank Street and Uncommon at Snider Plaza, led by Centretown BIA, that are helping reimagine downtown spaces and attract more people back into the core.
