Business Improvement Areas are a Canadian innovation, first created in Toronto in 1970 when local businesses came together on Bloor to invest in their main street’s future. The idea quickly spread globally. In 1977, Ottawa established its first BIA on Bank Street (now Centretown), setting the foundation for a model of community investment that continues today.
That same collaborative spirit is alive on Ottawa’s main streets. BIAs support neighbourhoods across urban, suburban, and rural communities, helping them thrive as complete 15 minute neighbourhoods where people can live, work, shop, and connect. Funded by the businesses and commercial property owners they represent, BIAs are a direct investment in community success through streetscape improvements, events, promotion, and advocacy.
Presently, there are more than 2,500 BIAs in North America, with 270 in Ontario. Ottawa is home to 18 Business Improvement Areas and growing.
