Expanding the Role of Ottawa BIAs in Community Safety and Well-Being

Press Releases | Letters

Ottawa Business Improvement Areas (BIAs) are increasingly expanding beyond their traditional economic development role to help address broader social challenges that impact main streets and neighbourhood well-being. This includes initiatives related to homelessness, unemployment, mental health, and community safety through education, partnerships, and local collaboration.

BIAs recently participated in a workshop with the Alliance to End Homelessness Ottawa to learn from frontline experts about responding to homelessness with empathy, compassion, and informed approaches, including understanding available community supports and who to contact in different situations.

They are also supporting employment-focused initiatives that connect unemployed job seekers with local employers — including directing employers to connect with Pinecrest-Queensway Community Health Centre and Employment Ontario, and organizing local job fairs.

Through these evolving roles, Ottawa BIAs are increasingly contributing to safer, more inclusive, and connected communities that support both economic vitality and community well-being.
